Wellawatte beach is the hotspot for the tourists and joggers, recently the beach covered in oil and tar. This situation called as ‘tarball effect’, where a form of petroleum has ‘weathered’ after detached in the ocean. Petroleum undertakes physical changes when it exposed to elements like water and wind. It is spread over a wider area. When the Wellawatte beach situation was noted to General Manager of the Marine Environment Protection Agency (MEPA) they closed the beach for few days to do the cleanup operation, from Wellawatte to Mount Lavinia area and now the beach has been declared open to the public.

Anyways, there no visible impact of this incident on the local biosphere or any complaints of major health issues. But, it caused major inconvenience to the public who visit the beach for their leisure time.Government investigating this incident to find out whether it's an accidental oil spill or intentional.
