Why do people judge a person based on their A/L results?

Why do people judge a person based on their A/L results?

In Sri Lanka many people have a mentality of judging a person based on the results they get in the A/L examination.This sometimes becomes a reason for some suicides of youngsters.
They set a fine line between those who enter into medical and E-faculty and those who fail to enter those faculties.
A student who is not eligible to enter medicine or engineering are portrayed as a person who is not worth living in the society!

What kind of mentality is this? There are a lot more to explore and learn in this vast world.There are more and more opportunities out there.
In my POV, if a student fails to enter those faculties even after great efforts and hard works and ends up just getting three passes or entering into some other faculties; yes it's more than enough to survive.
On the other hand, if a student realizes his/her mistakes after the results and try to change themselves it's much better as well.

We all are humans and not god, all of us do mistakes in our life.The society should change their views on judging a person based on their A/L results.

I accept it Helena. I am also a victim of this issue. Once you fail to prove yourself people will tantrum on your failure. Actually, we don't have to worry about their judgments. But the worst part is those tantrums hurt our parents than us. Not only in AL, OL, and grade 5 scholarship have the same effects. People don't realize it until it happens to their child. There is a belief that Medicine and Engineering are considered the only 2 ways of proving ourselves talented. But there are several other fields we can be successful than Doctors and Engineers compared to money and respect they are earning.

Last week in a family gathering ,When we talked about girls working at night some of our relatives said that doctors can work at night but other girls can't do that.
I don't know why they give all the privilege to a girl because she is a doctor.It's really unfair.

Exactly Adiza.It hurts more when those immature people comment on our parents.The most irritating part is ,each time the government releases the results or z-scores those people start talking about this.In my view those who have that mentality is the ones with small children who haven't even completed their O/L's or A/L's and some teachers or educational people in school level who doesn't have much exposure:mad:

Yes Bhavya.Most of the people are narrow minded and think that all the other jobs are waste.They don't even know the choices we have in SriLanka currently.

Yeah most of our parents don't know the wide range of job opportunities we have in our country,they think medicine and engineering are the high salary jobs,
We should make them aware about the job opportunities we have in our current world.

This is a curse for our society and we have to change the mindset of our people. From the childhood everyone is told to study well instead of telling to be a successful person in life without realising that a/l is one of the path for success , not final success

HI there Helena! This is seriously a good question, a question that I always wanted to ask! I think yes people judge us based on our a level results no matter how skilled your and how well you did back then in you levels people will always point out on your levels!

No matter how much skilled of a skilled person you're! If you didn't do well in your alevels people will judge you. There are cases where students have even ended up in suicides. I guess the first thing is our family should understand before our society does! As far as our mindsets aren't changed nothing can really be changed!

From a long time there is believe in our society if we want to achieve success in life we should hold a university degree.People should understand education just pave the path for success not the entire cause for success. To achieve success we need to have passion,skills,talent and most importantly hard work.

Well said Adiza people who thing big about A/Levels are the people who don't have much exposure in the world they are just living in their circle without knowing what is happening in the world and how many opportunities people have in the world to achieve success in their desire fields.
