Also wondergirl there is a feature in Facebook to handle who can send you friend requests. You can manage it via settings. There you can select the audience to sent friend request. For example: Friends of friends.
It may also helpful in managing the unwanted friend requests.

Yes mostly i faced this type of problem specially after i installed the fb lite. My suggestion, settings and better maintain your post privacy than public. Another idea i used is avoid unwanted tagging. You can see most of the friend request come from the day you tag some posts of your friends.
