Do we have the power to take away someone's life?

We have laws that give the government the power to take someone's life.
Is that fair? Is killing an answer to everything? Just killing someone would never solve a crime.
The solution is to make him/her realize the pain and effect of the crime committed. Instead, we opt for the death penalty.
How many of you agree with this?

I am not supporting death penalty,as you said death is not a solution for a crime,we should make them to realize the consequences of their crime and let them to do the needful to rectify their wrong doings.So that they also get the chance to live a peaceful life.but if a person do the same crime again and again then there is no point giving him or her more chances.
