Hi all,

With so much of our daily life happening online—banking, studying, working, and even entertainment—cybersecurity is something we can’t ignore anymore. Sadly, scams and hacks are becoming more common in Sri Lanka too, and many young people are falling victim simply because they aren’t aware of basic precautions.
Here are some simple but effective tips to stay safe:

  • Use strong, unique passwords and change them regularly (avoid birthdays, names, or phone numbers).
  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever possible, especially for email and banking apps.
  • Be careful with public Wi-Fi – avoid logging into sensitive accounts when using free networks.
  • Think before you click – don’t open suspicious links in emails, SMS, or social media.
  • Keep your devices updated – system and app updates often fix security vulnerabilities.
  • Back up important data so you won’t lose everything in case of ransomware or device theft.
  • Limit what you share publicly online – oversharing personal info makes you an easy target.

I’d love to know: what are some extra steps you personally take to protect your accounts and devices? Have you (or someone you know) faced an online scam or security issue?
Let’s share our experiences so more people here can stay safe online!
