Facebook revealed that a software bug had exposed photos of 6.8 million users, including photos that had not been published.

It made the announcement one day after hosting his new privacy experience "It's Your Facebook" in Bryant Park, New York.It said several third-party apps had access to "more photos than usual" for 12 days in September. This is the latest in a series of data breaches on the social network that needed to be reviewed after the Cambridge Analytical data scandal.

"When someone allows an app to access their photos on Facebook, we usually grant access to the app only to photos that people share in their history."In this case, the mistake would eventually have allowed developers to access other photos," the company said in a blog post. It said nearly 1,500 claims had been affected by the bankruptcy. In addition to giving developers access to photos in a user's timeline, they have given them access to photos published in Stories and Marketplace. It also allowed them to see pictures that people had uploaded but had not posted on Facebook, for example, if they started writing but did not complete a publication.Facebook said it would work with interested developers to help them "remove photos from affected users."
