Saliva is necessary to digest food,moisten and cleanse our mouths.It also helps to prevent infection in our mouths by controlling fungi and bacteria in the mouth. When we don't make enough amount of saliva our mouth gets dry and extremely uncomfortable. Dry mouth also known as xerostomia can caused by certain medications use to treat diseases like Ashthma,pain, depression, anxiety, allergies,Parkinson's disease, rheumatoid arthritis and colds or can be a side effect of certain infections and diseases. It known Sjögren's syndrome which can be caused by illness like diabetes, cystic fibrosis,anemia, and rheumatoid arthritis.


Common symptoms of dry mouth:

  • Dry and a sticky feeling in the mouth
  • Frequently get thirst
  • Sore mouth: cracked lips, split skin or sores at the corners of mouth
  • Feeling dryness in the throat
  • Raw,dry and red tongue
  • Trouble in tasting,chewing and swallowing food or having problem in speaking.
  • Sore throat
  • Bad breath problem


Treatments for dry mouth:


  • Chew sugar-free gums or suck sugar-free candy.
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Brush with a fluoride toothpaste and regularly check up with your dentist
  • As much as possible breathe through your nose ,not your mouth
  • Add moisture to the bedroom air.
  • If it caused by medicine talk with your doctor and reduce the dosage or change the medicine
  • Use a substitute of artificial saliva .
