Why do people like compliments?

Everybody likes to get compliments, because we are humans love to hear praises. In my point of view, Compliment is one of the ways to motivate people. Because if you did something successfully, people will give a compliment to you. That time you got happiness and grateful. So this is a way of motivation. What do you think about it?
